I posted this picture of 1960s nurses because the nurses play a very large role in this book. They are the ones controlling all of the patients. For example, Susanna explains the extent of observation every patient is required by the amount of nurses needed to watch them. "The privileges start at no privileges...the next rung, two-to-ones...one-to-ones...one-to-twos...group..." (49-50). Because Georgina and Susanna were two of the calmer patients and most behaved, they were allowed group privileges. Another duty of the nurses is checks. Every so often a nurse would pop in your room, "checks" (55) to make sure everything is fine, then leave. Susanna started with five minute checks, then progressively got to thirty minute checks; it all depends on how behaved you are.
